Costco's legendary return policy, once a beacon of leniency, is undergoing a significant transformation. This policy, which allowed returns of even half-eaten meals and month-old Christmas trees, is now being tightened. The warehouse giant is implementing restrictions, reducing the scope of its 100% satisfaction guarantee.
The End of an Era?
Costco members are feeling the impact. While employees once accepted returns without question, customers now report being asked for proof of purchase and even having their return history scrutinized. One member, contemplating returning items up to four years old, noted a distinct shift from the "no questions asked" policy of the past.
"It's just not the same easy, friendly experience it used to be," they said.
But here's where it gets controversial: some understand Costco's stricter stance. With $104 billion lost to fraudulent returns in 2024 alone, according to Appriss Retail, it's no wonder the warehouse is taking a harder line.
And this is the part most people miss: Costco's return policy has always been about satisfaction, not buyer's remorse.
