The biting cold is forcing numerous school districts in Stark County to shut their doors. Here's what you need to know about the latest closures and updates.
As of January 19, 2026, at 6:08 p.m. ET, frigid temperatures have led to the decision to cancel classes in various communities across Stark County. For instance, Superintendent Jeff Talbert of Canton City Schools announced that his district will not hold classes on Tuesday, January 20, due to the severe cold conditions. He made this announcement during an MLK event held in Canton on January 19.
Additionally, Plain Local Schools confirmed via email that they too would be canceling classes on January 20. They stated, "Please note that Central Office will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For updates on all other events, please check plainlocal.org and ParentSquare."
Beyond these districts, several others are also suspending classes, including Jackson Local, Perry Local, Canton Local, Lake Local, Fairless, Northwest, Carrollton, West Branch, Sebring, and Massillon City schools. Private institutions like Lake Center Christian, R.G. Drage, St. Joan of Arc, and St. Peter School are among those also opting to close for the day.
Tonight, the temperature is expected to drop to a chilly 4 degrees. Unfortunately, January 20 won't bring much relief, with forecasted highs only reaching 17 degrees and wind chill factors plummeting to as low as minus 11. By the evening of January 20, temperatures are set to fall again to about 9 degrees.
On a slightly brighter note, temperatures are projected to rise on January 21, reaching a high of 36 degrees, but the winds will remain strong, with gusts hitting up to 29 mph.
For residents seeking warmth, warming shelters are available in Canton throughout the day and night.
Stay tuned for further updates as more closures are reported!
