The Wrestling Debate: Usman vs. Cormier's Take on Jon Jones
In a surprising turn of events, Kamaru Usman has stepped into the debate, challenging Daniel Cormier's prediction of a wrestling match against Jon Jones. With Cormier and Jones fresh from their coaching roles on ALF Global's "Alf Reality" series, Cormier proposed settling their differences through a wrestling match under the Real Freestyle Wrestling banner.
Cormier, an Olympic veteran, confidently stated he'd dominate Jones 10-0 in a wrestling match. However, Usman urges us not to underestimate Jones' wrestling prowess, despite his lack of Division-I accolades.
"It's more complex than that," Usman explained on his "Pound 4 Pound" podcast with Henry Cejudo. "Jon Jones' talent in wrestling is often overlooked because he didn't compete at the Division-I level. I truly believe he could've been a multiple-time Division-I champion. He was that good. I've seen him decide to wrestle, and it was like watching a freak athletic talent at work."
Usman continued, "Jon and his brother Arthur are both New York state champions. While that's high school-level, it's still impressive. And yes, DC has the international accolades, but they've fought. In those MMA matches, when it came down to wrestling, Jon held his own. It's not going to be as easy as Cormier thinks."
But here's where it gets controversial... Jones and Cormier have a history in the UFC light heavyweight division. Cormier suffered his first career loss to Jones at UFC 182, and their rematch at UFC 214 ended in a knockout victory for Jones, although the result was later overturned due to Jones' failed post-fight drug test. In their first fight, Jones landed three takedowns.
So, who do you think would win in a wrestling match? Usman's take on Jones' wrestling skills is certainly an interesting perspective. Do you agree with Usman's assessment? Or do you think Cormier's Olympic experience gives him an edge? Let us know in the comments and join the debate!
